How to recognise it
- An o that is a true circle, or very close to one.
- In the stricter designs, a single-storey a — one bowl, no hook over the top.
- Strokes of nearly even weight the whole way round a curve.
- Capitals built on squares and circles: a very round C, G and O.
Geometric or grotesque?
A grotesque comes out of nineteenth-century sign lettering and closes its apertures; a geometric comes out of drawing instruments and keeps its bowls round. Set the word “Rag” in both: the geometric a and g look constructed, the grotesque ones look written by an engineer.
