Tajawal

Boutros Fonts, Mourad Boutros, Soulaf Khalifeh · Boutros Fonts · 2017 · OFL-1.1

Where Amiri is a book face, Tajawal is a screen one: the Arabic is simplified towards the geometric, the strokes are close to even in weight, and the whole thing is built to survive being set small in an interface. Seven weights and no italic, which is the right decision for a script that does not have one. Its character set is Arabic and plain Latin only, with no Turkish and none of the Cyrillic or Greek that a European sans of this size would carry.

Latin and Latin Extended have no lists of their own. An alphabet gets one when enough fonts here carry it and not nearly all of them do — otherwise the page would just be the archive again.

Questions

Is Tajawal free for commercial use?
Yes. Tajawal is released under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, which allows commercial use with no fee and no attribution requirement. You can use it in client work, in products you sell, on the web and in print. The one thing you may not do is sell the font file on its own. The licence is inside the download.
Can I use Tajawal in a logo?
Yes. The licence covers the font software, not the artwork you make with it, so a logo set in Tajawal belongs to you — including if you later register it as a trademark. You do not need permission and you do not owe anything to Boutros Fonts, Mourad Boutros, Soulaf Khalifeh. What the licence stops you doing is redistributing the font file itself as a product.
How do I install Tajawal?
Download the zip and unzip it. On a Mac, select the 7 font files inside and open them, then press Install Font. On Windows, select them, right-click and choose Install. Restart any application that was already open before it will show up.
Does Tajawal support Turkish?
No. Tajawal covers Latin, but not the extra characters Turkish needs — the dotless ı, the dotted İ, and ğ and ş. Turkish text set in it would come out with missing or wrong letters.
Does Tajawal support Latin, Latin Extended and Arabic?
Yes. Tajawal covers Latin, Latin Extended and Arabic, across 465 glyphs. Anything outside those alphabets is not included — the character map further up this page shows exactly what you get.
