Handwriting covers a wide range, from formal engraved script to a marker pen, and the two ends of it behave nothing alike. What they share is that they imitate a stroke made by a hand, which means the letters are drawn to join, to lean, or to vary — and that a face like this is judged on how convincingly it does that rather than on how legible each letter is alone.

The most common disappointment is setting one in capitals. A script face has its joins built into the lowercase; set the whole thing in capitals and the connections have nothing to connect to, and it looks broken because in a sense it is. If a design needs a handwritten look in capitals, use a marker or brush face rather than a connected script.

The second is length. Handwriting reads slowly by design — the variation the eye enjoys for six words is the same variation that makes sixty words hard work. Use it for a name, a quotation, a signature, a greeting. Anything a reader has to get through belongs in something plainer.

Check the numerals and the punctuation before committing, and check them at the size you will use. These faces are drawn for the letters first, and a beautiful script with an awkward ampersand or numerals from a different mood is a common and fixable surprise.
