Permanent Marker

Font Diner · Font Diner · 2010 · Apache-2.0

There is no real lowercase in Permanent Marker. Type a small letter and you get the same capital at about four fifths the height, which is exactly how a chisel-tip pen behaves in the hand of somebody labelling a box. The strokes have the blunt, slightly dry edges that come off a marker running low, and everything leans forward at the same angle. It covers Latin and the European accents but not Turkish, so the g with a breve and the s with a cedilla are simply absent.

Latin and Latin Extended have no lists of their own. An alphabet gets one when enough fonts here carry it and not nearly all of them do — otherwise the page would just be the archive again.

Questions

Is Permanent Marker free for commercial use?
Yes. Permanent Marker is released under the Apache License 2.0, which allows commercial use with no fee and no attribution requirement. You can use it in client work, in products you sell, on the web and in print. The one thing you may not do is sell the font file on its own. The licence is inside the download.
Can I use Permanent Marker in a logo?
Yes. The licence covers the font software, not the artwork you make with it, so a logo set in Permanent Marker belongs to you — including if you later register it as a trademark. You do not need permission and you do not owe anything to Font Diner. What the licence stops you doing is redistributing the font file itself as a product.
How do I install Permanent Marker?
Download the zip and unzip it. On a Mac, select the 1 font file inside and open them, then press Install Font. On Windows, select them, right-click and choose Install. Restart any application that was already open before it will show up.
Does Permanent Marker support Turkish?
No. Permanent Marker covers Latin, but not the extra characters Turkish needs — the dotless ı, the dotted İ, and ğ and ş. Turkish text set in it would come out with missing or wrong letters.
Does Permanent Marker support Latin and Latin Extended?
Yes. Permanent Marker covers Latin and Latin Extended, across 230 glyphs. Anything outside those alphabets is not included — the character map further up this page shows exactly what you get.
Why does the lowercase in Permanent Marker look like capitals?
Because it is capitals. The font has one set of letterforms, and the lowercase slots hold the same shapes drawn at roughly four fifths the height rather than true minuscules with ascenders and descenders. That is deliberate and it is how the face was drawn, so mixed-case text comes out as large and small capitals. If you need a marker face with real lowercase, Gloria Hallelujah and Shadows Into Light in this archive have one.
