Casual handwriting made with a felt tip or a brush pen rather than a nib.

About marker typefaces

How to recognise it

  • An even stroke with the slight texture of a felt tip or brush pen.
  • An uneven baseline and letters that vary from one instance to the next.
  • Casual, everyday letterforms rather than formal ones.
  • Frequently a single weight, because handwriting has one.

Marker or comic?

Comic lettering is drawn to be loud and even; marker lettering is somebody writing. If it looks like a note rather than a panel, it is a marker face.

Where it works

Notes and annotations, social graphics, packaging with a handmade tone, and anywhere a design needs a human hand in it.

Where it does not

Body text, forms and anything official. Irregularity is charming for a line and tiring for a paragraph.
