Variable font

The file stores the outlines once and describes how they move along named axes. Weight is the common one; width, optical size, slant and italic are the other registered axes, and a designer can invent their own. Asking for weight 437 is a legitimate request, and the font computes it.

Two things follow. On the web it is usually a large saving: one file covering nine weights beats nine files, and you can use the in-between values you would otherwise never have had. On a desktop it is more awkward — Word, Canva and older versions of Photoshop see one file, offer whatever weight the file defaults to, and give you no way to reach the rest. That is why this archive offers a static download beside the variable one wherever the publisher provides it.

The default instance is worth knowing about. A handful of families default to something other than the regular weight, so installing the variable file gives you a hairline or a heavy where you expected a normal — the font pages here say so explicitly when it happens.
