Before you choose a Arabic font

Arabic is written right to left and joined. Most letters take a different shape at the start, the middle and the end of a word, and on their own — so a font covers Arabic properly only if it draws all of those forms and knows when to use each. The character map on a font page shows the letters alone; typing a real word into the specimen is the actual test.

Check three things before choosing: that the Latin and the Arabic were drawn to sit together at the same apparent size, that the numerals you need are there — Arabic-Indic, Persian or Western — and, for Persian or Urdu, that پ چ ژ گ and ی are in the file. The character map lists which of those each font has.

Kufi styles, square and geometric, suit headings and signage. Naskh, rounder and closer to the pen, is the book hand and reads better at length.
