Climate Crisis
The axis in this font is not weight, it is the year. It runs from 1979 to 2050 and the letterforms erode as it climbs, because their mass is drawn from projections of arctic sea ice: at 1979 it is a solid heavy poster face and by 2050 it has been eaten down to fragile strokes with holes through them. It is an argument rather than a typeface, and it is a good one. The specimen on this page shows the 1979 end, which is where the font defaults.

- Is Climate Crisis free for commercial use?
- Yes. Climate Crisis is released under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, which allows commercial use with no fee and no attribution requirement. You can use it in client work, in products you sell, on the web and in print. The one thing you may not do is sell the font file on its own. The licence is inside the download.
- Can I use Climate Crisis in a logo?
- Yes. The licence covers the font software, not the artwork you make with it, so a logo set in Climate Crisis belongs to you — including if you later register it as a trademark. You do not need permission and you do not owe anything to Daniel Coull, Eino Korkala. What the licence stops you doing is redistributing the font file itself as a product.
- How do I install Climate Crisis?
- Download the zip and unzip it. On a Mac, select the 1 font file inside and open them, then press Install Font. On Windows, select them, right-click and choose Install. Restart any application that was already open before it will show up.
- Does Climate Crisis support Turkish?
- Yes. Climate Crisis includes the characters Turkish needs that plain Latin does not — the dotless ı, the dotted İ, and ğ, ş, ü, ö and ç in both cases. This was checked against the font file itself, not assumed from the fact that it covers Latin.
- Does Climate Crisis support Latin, Latin Extended, Turkish, Cyrillic and Cyrillic Extended?
- Yes. Climate Crisis covers Latin, Latin Extended, Turkish, Cyrillic and Cyrillic Extended, across 3,499 glyphs. Anything outside those alphabets is not included — the character map further up this page shows exactly what you get.
- Why does this page say Climate Crisis is not a variable font when it has an axis?
- Because its axis is not weight. The file is a variable font with a single axis called YEAR that runs from 1979 to 2050, and this site records a font as variable when one file carries a range of weights, which this one does not — it has one weight and a timeline. Marking it variable here would tell you that you can slide between weights in the download, and you cannot. To use the axis, install the font and set font-variation-settings: "YEAR" 2050 on the web, or move the YEAR slider in any application that shows variable axes. The specimen above is the 1979 end, which is the default the file ships with.
