About slab serif typefaces
How to recognise it
- Serifs about as heavy as the stems, cut square rather than tapered.
- Low contrast — the strokes barely change weight.
- Sturdy, upright letterforms with generous counters.
- Often a large lowercase, drawn to survive rough printing.
Slab serif or typewriter?
A typewriter face is a slab drawn for a machine: even colour, often monospaced, and usually with the roughness of a struck key. A slab serif proper is proportionally spaced and drawn for display or text.
Typewriter fonts →Where it works
Headlines, signage, editorial furniture and anywhere a serif has to hold its own against photographs.
Where it does not
Delicate work. A slab is the least subtle serif there is, and at length it makes a page feel heavy.
