Free fonts with Vietnamese support

Vietnamese stacks two marks on a single vowel, which most Latin fonts are not drawn to handle. These ones are.

Every font listed here was checked against its own character file, not against what its publisher claims.

Before you choose a Vietnamese font

Vietnamese is Latin, and it is the hardest Latin there is. A single letter can carry two marks at once — a letter diacritic such as the circumflex, horn or breve, and a tone mark on top of it — producing ế, ộ, ữ, ằ and ẳ. Many fonts contain every one of those characters and draw them badly.

What goes wrong is spacing rather than coverage: the stacked marks collide with each other, or with the line above, or the tone mark sits so far off-centre that the word looks broken. Type “Tiếng Việt vẫn giữ được” into the specimen and look along the tops of the letters.

The other letter to check is đ and its capital Đ, and the one setting to check is line height: Vietnamese needs a little more than English at the same size, for exactly the reason above.
