Free fonts with Greek support

The Greek alphabet, for modern Greek as well as mathematical and scientific setting.

Every font listed here was checked against its own character file, not against what its publisher claims.

Before you choose a Greek font

Greek has its own lowercase tradition rather than a variant of the Latin one, and a font drawn Latin-first usually shows it: the α, δ, ξ and ψ look assembled from Latin parts, and the whole line sits at a different colour from the Latin beside it. Set a Greek sentence next to an English one in the specimen and look at the two greys.

Modern Greek is monotonic — one accent, the tonos, plus the dialytika. What a font has to get right is the position of that accent on every vowel, including the capitals: Ά, Έ, Ή, Ί, Ό, Ύ, Ώ. Fonts that fail do it by clipping the accent at the top of the line, which shows only at tight line heights.

If the text is ancient or Byzantine you need the polytonic marks as well, and those live in Greek Extended rather than here. Very few free families carry them.
