Commercial use

Commercial use means using a font in work that makes money — a client project, a product, an advertisement — and it is the permission a licence most often withholds.

A font described as “free for personal use” is not free. It is a demonstration version, and using it for a client, a product or anything that earns is a licence breach regardless of how it was labelled on the site you downloaded it from. This is the single most common way designers acquire a legal problem, and it usually surfaces years later when somebody notices.

Every font in this archive allows commercial use, because the only licences accepted here are the SIL Open Font License, Apache 2.0 and the public domain, and all three permit it explicitly. That is why the licence file is inside every download: the permission is worth nothing if you cannot produce it.

Commercial use is not the same as being allowed to redistribute the font, sell it, or hand the file to a client. Those are separate permissions, and the OFL grants some and not others — see the licence page for which.
