Free fonts with Devanagari support

Before you choose a Devanagari font

Devanagari hangs its letters from a horizontal headline and combines consonants into conjuncts — two or three letters drawn as a single shape. A font can hold every letter of the alphabet and still set Hindi badly if its conjuncts are few or crude.

Type a real sentence with conjuncts into the specimen — क्षत्रिय, द्वार, श्री — and check that the vowel signs land in the right place above and below. Several fonts here were drawn with a Latin companion of the same colour, which is what you want for text that mixes the two.
