UnifrakturMaguntia

j. mach wust · 2010 · OFL-1.1

This is Fraktur in the strict sense rather than a gothic flavour applied to roman letters: the strokes are broken at the joins, the contrast comes from a nib held at a steep constant angle, and the capitals carry the curled flourishes that make them the hardest part of the alphabet to read. Maguntia is the Latin name for Mainz, and the drawing follows a German type rather than inventing one. Its character set is Latin only, and it is missing not just the Turkish letters but the dotless i as well.

Latin has no list of its own. An alphabet gets one when enough fonts here carry it and not nearly all of them do — otherwise the page would just be the archive again.

Questions

Is UnifrakturMaguntia free for commercial use?
Yes. UnifrakturMaguntia is released under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, which allows commercial use with no fee and no attribution requirement. You can use it in client work, in products you sell, on the web and in print. The one thing you may not do is sell the font file on its own. The licence is inside the download.
Can I use UnifrakturMaguntia in a logo?
Yes. The licence covers the font software, not the artwork you make with it, so a logo set in UnifrakturMaguntia belongs to you — including if you later register it as a trademark. You do not need permission and you do not owe anything to j. mach wust. What the licence stops you doing is redistributing the font file itself as a product.
How do I install UnifrakturMaguntia?
Download the zip and unzip it. On a Mac, select the 1 font file inside and open them, then press Install Font. On Windows, select them, right-click and choose Install. Restart any application that was already open before it will show up.
Does UnifrakturMaguntia support Turkish?
No. UnifrakturMaguntia covers Latin, but not the extra characters Turkish needs — the dotless ı, the dotted İ, and ğ and ş. Turkish text set in it would come out with missing or wrong letters.
Does UnifrakturMaguntia support Latin?
Yes. UnifrakturMaguntia covers Latin, across 270 glyphs. Anything outside those alphabets is not included — the character map further up this page shows exactly what you get.
